Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs Photorealism Gouache Bird Painting
Gouache Painting on Watercolour Board 1983 16 x 12 ins private collection
A Photorealism Bird Painting of a male Chaffinch. The reference photo for this artwork was taken when I was about 16 years old on a family holiday in Devon. The Chaffinches were very tame and used to perch on car bonnets waiting for food scraps to be thrown to them.
Although the Chaffinch is one of the more brightly coloured of British Birds it is well camouflaged against the complexity of the grass which takes up half of the Painting.
Photorealism Bird Painting Technique: The Chaffinch Picture was painted to a finished state in very small sections with very little over-painting, a Painting Method I rarely use these days.
No white paint was used in the Chaffinch Painting, all the lighter areas are where the Watercolour Board is allowed to show through.
