Mallard Duck Anas platyrhynchos Watercolour Bird Wildlife Painting
Watercolour on Paper 2000 16 x 12 ins private collection
A Watercolour Bird Painting of a Mallard Drake (male). This is probably Britain's best-known species of Duck and is to be seen on almost any stretch of water from rivers, lakes and canals to small ponds.
Painting Technique: As with most of my Watercolours, no white paint was used, the lighter areas are just the Watercolour Paper showing through. I chose not to give this painting too high a finish, preferring to leave it with an Illustration type feel. Art Masking Fluid was applied over the Mallard to protect it from the broad Watercolour Washes as they were applied to the water. The rubber solution Art Masking Fluid was then peeled away and the details of the Mallard Duck Painting were painted using a selection of fine Sable Paint Brushes.
I painted a picture of a female Mallard Duck with a similar composition but didn't make a photographic record of it. The female Mallard Duck is much more drably coloured in various shades of brown. A Signed Greetings Card of this Painting is available click here
