Seagull
on a Chimney Pot,
Staithes Watercolour Yorkshire Landscape Painting
Watercolour on Paper 1990s 12 x 16 ins Jenny Bows Collection
A Watercolour Landscape Painting of Staithes, near Whitby, showing the higgledy-piggledy rooftops characteristic of small Fishing Villages on the north-east coast of England.
The pyramidal composition leads up to the light coloured solitary Herring Gull which stands counter-pointed against the dark cliffs in shadow in the background. The red terracotta roof tiles are typical of this part of the country.
The windswept grass in the foreground was painted with rubber solution Masking Fluid to keep the Watercolour Paper clean until the houses were Painted, then it was rubbed off and Watercolour Washes were applied using a Wet Into Wet Painting Technique. The foreground of this Painting of Staithes was left minimal to keep the focus on the red Chimney Pot and the Seagull.
