Captain Cook & the Whale Bones, Whitby, North Yorkshire Yorkshire Marine Landscape Acrylic Painting
Acrylic on Board 1999 12 x 8 ins private collection
An acrylic landscape / marine painting of Whitby on the north-east coast of England depicting the monument to English explorer Captain James Cook who sailed around the world in the ship The Endeavour.
The view looks out over the North Sea. In the foreground is the famous giant whale-bone arch symbolising Whitby's whaling past.
The tourists are dwarfed by the whale bones and are struggling against the buffeting wind from the sea.
The acrylic paint is applied quite scratchily with a Winsor & Newton Sceptre Gold brush - the blues are a mix of Ultramarine Blue, White, and just a hint of Alizarin Crimson.
It has just rained and the colour of the damp sky is reflected in the road which runs by the seafront.
